Design is the planning that lays the basis for the making of every object or system. It can be used both as a noun and as a verb and, in a broader way, it means applied arts and engineering (See design disciplines below). As a verb, "to design" refers to the process of originating and developing a plan for a product, structure, system, or component with intention. As a noun, "a design" is used for either the final (solution) plan (e.g. proposal, drawing, model, description) or the result of implementing that plan in the form of the final product of a design process. This classification aside, in its broadest sense no other limitations exist and the final product can be anything from socks and jewellery to graphical user interfaces and charts. Even virtual concepts such as corporate identity and cultural traditions such as celebration of certain holidays are sometimes designed. More recently, processes (in general) have also been treated as products of design, giving new meaning to the term "process design".

The person designing is called a designer, which is also a term used for people who work professionally in one of the various design areas, usually also specifying which area is being dealt with (such as a fashion designer, concept designer or web designer). Designing often requires a designer to consider the aesthetic, functional, and many other aspects of an object or a process, which usually requires considerable research, thought, modeling, interactive adjustment, and re-design.

With such a broad definition, there is no universal language or unifying institution for designers of all disciplines. This allows for many differing philosophies and approaches toward the subject. However, serious study of design demands increased focus on the design process.

How do you design an interactive site that allows businesses to subscribe or post their information?
Q. I would like to design a content based website that is interactive and allows certain business to subscribe or post their business information. I'm somewhat frustrated because, I understand the process of getting a registered domain and hosting service, and the use of canned templates like yahoo, and google sites. What are some of the tools one needs to design an interactive site where business can post information and members of the site can blog?

A. To design an interactive website, you need: HTML, Javascript, a server side language, a database, AJAX and very SERIOUS programming knowledge and experience. Failing that, you can try to download a thousand "free scripts" and/or CMS, and try to adapt them to your needs. This will take you longer than learning to program in all existing languages (without talking of the frustrations and irritations you WILL suffer by not understanding the "WHY" that script does not work... Failing that, get a freelancer to work for you, but be prepared to pay the price! An interactive website like the one you propose will take some serious programming to do, and experts are not cheap. You will, surely, get a hundred amateurs to quote you a few hundred… [cont.]

Ecological design - Is it the same as design for sustainability?
Q. Has anyone noticed that 'design (and policy/planning/ etc) for sustainability' uses the old destructive paradigms of growth economics, toxic materials, and single function products, whereas 'ecological design' use processes of design and problem solving that really push green practice to a new standard ?

A. not the same at all... designing for sustainability sounds like it's designed to sustain growth. that's not desirable in a world of finite resources. small wonder that it stresses monocultures, and limits flexibility and imagination. but it does provide for convenience and reliance. existing products are refined with a nod toward nature, but they still exist and still consume! designing ecologically, for instance using principles of permaculture, allows for a greater use of problem solving and employs objects and landscapes that serve multiple functions. this increases diversity and ability to change. it also employs knowledge and experience from varied disciplines, giving MANY people a share in the ownership of said design. … [cont.]

How do i choose a sewing machine for designing clothes and some interior design?
Q. I am a beginner sewer but my goal is to design clothes and to do some interior design projects. My budget is $100-$200. I want something that will suitable for designing QUALITY clothes. Is this possible with my budget? Any suggestions?

A. Couture clothes are usually made with a straight stitch only machine. If they use a machine at all. $100-200 is a very slim budget for a new machine that can be expected to last for a number of years, but you should be able to find a pretty good pre-loved machine in that price range. (I wore out a $100 machine in less than a year 10 years ago.) See if your library has John Giordano's Sewing Machine Book and Carol Ahles Fine Machine Sewing. Giordano mentions specific models of used machines that are "golden", while Ahles concentrates on getting the most quality work from any machine (but check out the chapter on buying sewing machines, too). Otherwise, best advice I have for you is: My personal list of Must Haves include 1)… [cont.]

Quotes about Design

  • I think so many of the objects we're surrounded by seem trivial. And I think that's because they're either trying to make a statement or trying to be overtly different. What we were trying to do was have a very honest approach and an exploration of materials and surface treatment. So much of what we try to do is get to a point where the solution seems inevitable: you know, you think 'of course it's that way, why would it be any other way?' It looks so obvious, but that sense of inevitability in the solution is really hard to achieve.
  • The more I learnt about this cheeky — almost rebellious — company, the more it appealed to me, as it unapologetically pointed to an alternative in a complacent and creatively bankrupt industry. Apple stood for something and had reason for being that wasn't just about making money.
  • In a very real way, designers create the human environment; they make the things we use, the places we live and work, our modes of communication and mobility. Simply put, design matters. And at a moment in our history in which the scientific community has issued serious warnings about the negative impacts of our flawed designs-from global warming and water pollution to the loss of biodiversity and natural resources-designers have a critical role to play in the creation of a more just, healthful and sustainable world.
