North America is the northern continent of the Americas, situated in the Earth's northern hemisphere and almost totally in the western hemisphere. It is bordered on the north by the Arctic Ocean, on the east by the North Atlantic Ocean, on the southeast by the Caribbean Sea, and on the west by the North Pacific Ocean; South America lies to the southeast. North America covers an area of about 24,709,000 square kilometers (9,540,000 square miles), about 4.8% of the planet's surface or about 16.5% of its land area. As of July 2008, its population was estimated at nearly 529 million people. It is the third-largest continent in area, following Asia and Africa, and the fourth in population after Asia, Africa, and Europe.

What is your opinion about the formation of a North American Union?
Q. The president of the United States and leaders from Canada and Mexico, with influence from big business, are pushing for what is essentially a North American Union. This is being done without oversight from Congress or input from the citizens. I`d like to know your thoughts about this and what, if anything, can be done.

A. I'm for it if this means we get the same universal healthcare that both Mexico and Canada have.

So is Central America not considered apart of the North American continent?
Q. Someone asked the following question "How many countries are there in North America". A bunch of people came up with 3 diff. answers. 2, 3, 23 I can understand the people who say 2 or 3 cause its just a matter of interpretation. Are you including all of North America or just the ones physically to the north. I dont get the people saying 3. If your going to include Mexico, why not include all the other "central american" countries?

A. If you are dividing the western hemisphere into parts and you use two of them, then it is customary to divide it at the narrowest point. Because of the different history of the countries south of Mexico and north of Columbia including their general insignificance, colonization, language, limited arable land, they are normally collected and called Central America. Almost all of Mexico's connections outside its borders are north, including one time ownership/ruling over much of Calif, Nevada, Az & NM, plus much of Texas. It is part of North America. If looking for similar problems, much related to size and poverty, the Caribbean Islands and Central America are related and sometimes joined.

What is the best technique/audio source to learn pronunciation of North American English?
Q. There is quite a difference between Bristish English and American English dialect. How can one pick up colloquial English in the North American context?

A. Watch U.S. television and / or movies. Study from the books, but listening to U.S. English actually being spoken is a very effective way to learn.
