In electricity generation, an electric generator is a device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. The reverse conversion of electrical energy into mechanical energy is done by a motor; motors and generators have many similarities. A generator forces electrons in the windings to flow through the external electrical circuit. It is somewhat analogous to a water pump, which creates a flow of water but does not create the water inside. The source of mechanical energy may be a reciprocating or turbine steam engine, water falling through a turbine or waterwheel, an internal combustion engine, a wind turbine, a hand crank, compressed air or any other source of mechanical energy. Q. I had to spell things a bit differently in the title to make it all fit in the allotted space. Anyways. When a 3 phase motor is used as a generator will it become three seperate generators when powered by an engine? When it is a capacitor start motor, will the start capacitor excite the generator (motor) and will it need to be converted to a motor RUN capacitor? If indeed you do have a three phase 120 volt electric motor (rare) you will be abel to have two power Supply but not three. The third phase is a combination for the other two legs (phases) and will result in a higher voltage the you will be able to use (generally around 180 volts) Just know there are some differences between an electric motor and a generator, prime example being a voltage regulator (the reason you hear a generator change sounds when something plugged into it.) Circuit protection breaker for amp over draw, source of grounding etc... While what you are thinking about can be done it will require a lot of effort and design, it will probably be cheaper to buy a generator. I hope this helps.
