Indigenous peoples are any ethnic group who inhabit a geographic region with which they have the earliest known historical connection. However, several widely accepted formulations, which define the term indigenous peoples in stricter terms, have been put forward by prominent and internationally recognized organizations, such as the United Nations, the International Labour Organization and the World Bank. Indigenous peoples in this article is used in such a narrower sense. Other related terms for indigenous peoples include aborigines ( æbəˈrɪdʒɪni (help·info)), aboriginal people, native people, first people, and autochthonous. "Indigenous peoples" may often be used in preference to these or other terms as a neutral replacement, where such terms may have taken on negative or pejorative connotations by their prior association and use. It is the preferred term in use by the United Nations and its subsidiary organizations. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by Concerned Citizen - Mon Oct 30 21:59:50 2006 Ethnography or history of indigenous Hawaiian peoples?
Q. The other day in lecture my prof briefly covered the populating of the Hawaiian islands and the history. It was fascinating! I would love to read more about the culture and history. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd like an actual book, not just an article. Thankies! Asked by Marie - Wed Nov 5 04:24:41 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you're interested in a large history book, I would recommend Hawaii Looking Back by Glen Grant and Bennett Hymer. It's definitely more of a history than an ethnography, but fascinating nonetheless. If you're looking for an archaeological perspective, check out books by Patrick Vinton Kirch. He's done a lot of work all throughout Polynesia and I think his archaeological work in Hawaii is pretty thorough.
