From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Indigenous peoples are any ethnic group who inhabit a geographic region with which they have the earliest known historical connection. However, several widely accepted formulations, which define the term indigenous peoples in stricter terms, have been put forward by prominent and internationally recognized organizations, such as the United Nations, the International Labour Organization and the World Bank. Indigenous peoples in this article is used in such a narrower sense. Other related terms for indigenous peoples include aborigines ( æbəˈrɪdʒɪni (help·info)), aboriginal people, native people, first people, and autochthonous. "Indigenous peoples" may often be used in preference to these or other terms as a neutral replacement, where such terms may have taken on negative or pejorative connotations by their prior association and use. It is the preferred term in use by the United Nations and its subsidiary organizations. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why did the Spanish conquerors intermarry the Natives while the English did not? Q. Okay. When America was first discovered and Spain came, they were marrying the natives and having children. When England came, however, they didn't marry the natives. Why? However from what little i do know about the said subject the British and the French were much more isolated and in the North, they suffered much harsher conditions and were encouraged against doing such things as breeding with the natives. Im not saying it didnt happen but less so. The Spainish is something of which I no very little about. However one point of fact was that the Spainsh were the only European country to adopt a stance that "if we dont breed then we wont survive" it was a way of increasing power initially. That is why is central america there is such a diversity of mixed race peoples. Answered by StephenB - Tue Sep 9 16:32:23 2008 Was it common for settlers to be robbed by natives? Q. Obviously, when the west was settled, there was a lot of friction between the settlers and the natives, and I know there was a lot of violence between them. However, was it common for the Natives (at least some of the tribes) to also rob the homes of the settlers if they killed them? I am writing a paper and would like to be as accurate as possible. It was always about the weapons to give them a fighting chance. Then it was other things mirrors, pots and pans, and those things they didn't have. Some of it was to make themselves more like the whites with some tribes others it was as trophies. Answered by Quiet Man - Tue Feb 3 14:32:04 2009 Could we have settled America without killing most of the natives?
Q. I just watched Dances with Wolves (a hugely anti-white movie) for the 5th time and it got me wondering whether we could have settled North America without taking over all of the Natives' land and killing a lot through war, thereby eliminating a lot of their culture. Anybody read up on any of this or have opinions? Could we have lived in harmony and still be as advanced technologically and governmentally as we are today? Asked by Riley B - Fri Jul 24 16:58:19 2009 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. Well, first of all, most of the natives were killed by accident, by diseases brought by the White Man from Europe that the natives had no resistance to. This decimated native populations by as much as 80-90% in the first century of contact. But beyond that, if we had tried to live with the natives, our own country would have come out looking much different. At the beginning of the US, politicians and even spiritual leaders taught the idea of Manifest Destiny, that our destiny was to take over the entire continent. Some well-meaning politicians and ministers actually spread the idea that God killed off the Indians with diseases because he wanted us to have the land. We forced Spain to sell us Florida, and we stole more than half of… [cont.] Answered by It's That Guy - Fri Jul 24 17:08:41 2009 From Yahoo Answer Search: "natives" Donahoo: A winter straight out of Maine
