From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Furniture (probably from the French 'fournir' — to provide) is the mass noun for the movable objects ('mobile' in Latin languages) intended to support various human activities such as seating and sleeping in beds, to hold objects at a convenient height for work using horizontal surfaces above the ground, or to store things. Storage furniture often makes use of doors, drawers, shelves and locks to contain, organize or secure smaller objects such as clothes, tools, books, and household goods. (See List of furniture types.) Furniture can be a product of design and is considered a form of decorative art. In addition to furniture's functional role, it can serve a symbolic or religious purpose. Domestic furniture works to create, in conjunction with furnishings such as clocks and lighting, comfortable and convenient interior spaces. Furniture can be made from many materials, including metal, plastic, and wood. Furniture can be made using a variety of woodworking joints which often reflect the local culture. Hi, I am have just formed a new company in my home and want to contribute my old furniture (in addition to money) as a start-up investment. This furniture is about 4 months old and I do not have any receipts for them. I do have CC statements though. 1) Can I contribute this furniture as start-up assets to my business? 2) How do I decide FMV for the furniture if I do not have receipts? Thanks Asked by stivare - Wed Nov 19 18:22:21 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You should start by reading the IRS rules for home office expense, and deciding if the furniture qualifies as being deductible. Personally, I wouldn't try to take a tax deduction for it unless it was in an area of my home designated as the office, and 100% used for that purpose. If the furniture is in your living room and used partially for business use and partially for personal use, the IRS will see a red flag if you get audited. If you do have a deductible home office, then the furniture in that office can be treated as a capital asset and depreciated over the life of the furniture. You may also be able to deduct the entire amount right away using Section 179 depreciation expense. It seems the credit card statements could serve as… [cont.] Answered by Log Furniture - Wed Nov 19 21:45:13 2008 How do i pack my furniture during long absence? Q. Hi, we are buying a new set of sofa (Leather), a new dining table (glass top with steel/aluminium bottom) and a cot (wooden). We would be using it for 2 months. Later we would be going to a different place for 4 to 5 years before we get back here again and use this furniture. During this long absence we are planning to pack all the furniture and lock it up in a room till we get back (after 4 to 5 years). Please let me know how I can pack these pieces of furniture and with what material should I pack such that once we get back the furniture is still in good shape as it would be today. Your ideas and suggestions would be of great help to me. Regards Sangeetha Asked by sangeeth_10 - Thu Jul 26 04:37:54 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. Just sheets/drop cloths to keep the dust off. I wouldn't wrap in plastic as the leather needs to breathe. Also, don't stack the upholstered pieces, it will collapse the padding over time. If space requires stacking the items, I'd build a simple platform (2x4's and plywood) to place one piece above another. It would also be a good idea to give all metal pieces a heavy coat of furniture paste wax to prevent rust/corrosion. Answered by JeffeVerde - Thu Jul 26 04:45:44 2007 What color furniture would look best in a white apartment?
Q. I'm moving into a new apartment in a couple of weeks, and I'm going to go buy a bunch of new furniture. But I'm not too sure as to what color furniture (sofa, tables, dinette, etc.) I should get. What will go good with an apartment with walls that are white, and carpet that is sort of a "dirty" white, but white nonetheless. Right now I'm thinking the obvious black but what do you think? Asked by Some_Guy - Tue Apr 25 12:10:59 2006 - - 20 Answers - 1 Comments A. Since white is a neautral color any color will go with it . That is why most rentals walls are painted white . Choose furniture that reflect your personnality. Do you like modern or country??? The main thing is that you get furniture that you like and that you are comfortable with. . Have a fun time shopping and congrats on your move. Answered by tuckernorma@sbcglobal.net - Tue Apr 25 12:47:55 2006 From Yahoo Answer Search: "furniture" Furniture orders fall 16 percent in July
